In the Oakland Steiner Lower and Middle School Curriculum there are the core content studies of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. In addition, the children learn two foreign languages, handwork, gardening, painting, drawing, modeling and later woodwork.  All the students begin with pentatonic flute and move on to learning the recorder. From third grade on students learn violin and later other orchestral instruments of their choice. Each year includes movement education that developmentally meets each age level and goes beyond sports and physical education.

In each grade, there is an interdisciplinary approach. The academic subjects are interwoven with the arts. Art in the forms of drawing, painting, modeling, drama, craft, and music are developed skills as separate subjects but are also interwoven in the curriculum to deepen the experience of learning and to broaden each student’s ability in this multi-faceted learning approach.
