Our Hot Lunch Program is nutritious and delicious!
During the Children's Center snack time, our children learn about food preparation and healthy eating. The preparation of their snacks involves preparing vegetables for soups and the grinding of the grains for bread making. This provides life lessons that plunge deeply beneath the surface of ordinary learning.
In these times, it is necessary that the children understand where food comes from. We plant the seeds, cultivate and weed the garden, harvest grains, vegetables and herbs to nourish our school community. In this way each child contributes to an anticipated harvest. This very process has inspired Oakland Steiner’s hot lunch program.
Our school cook, Xenie Dungjen, shares our commitment to providing fresh, nutritious food to help support the healthy eating habits of our children. She has been associated with the health food community in metro Detroit for over two decades, working as a chef and managing a successful health food deli. Organic and locally produced ingredients are used whenever possible. Meals are attractively served to the children and the children participate in the clean up after each meal. There is certain attention to the quality of food and much care is taken to prepare each and every meal.
