Hot Lunch Program
Where food is an essential ingredient of the curriculum
From the kindergarten snack table to the 8th grade chemistry lab, the grinding of the grains and baking of fresh breads all provide life lessons that plunge deeply beneath the surface of ordinary learning.
In these times, it is necessary that the children understand where food comes from. We plant the seeds, cultivate and weed the garden, harvest grains, vegetables and herbs to nourish our school community. In this way each child contributes to an anticipated harvest. This very process has inspired and launched Oakland Steiner’s hot lunch program.
Our school cook prepares nourishing stocks from scratch to create delicious soups to warm tummies and dance on palates. There are also bean and rice burritos, kebabs, pastas and fresh green salads on weekly menus. Organic and locally produced ingredients are used whenever possible. There is certain attention to the quality of food and much care is taken to prepare each and every meal.
Earth who gives to us this food,
Sun that makes it ripe and good,
Dear sun dear earth,
by you we live,
our loving thanks to you we give.
Hot lunch is currently served on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to both the Grades and the Children’s Center.
